The valley of the Soča river is famous for its nature which fascinates with its mightiness and tranquility. Therefore it is difficult to imagine that about 90 years ago the territory along the Soča (Isonzo in Italian) was one of the world scenes of bloody battles of the First World War. During 29 months, from 1915 to 1917, the maelstrom of war on the Isonzo Front claimed the blood-tax of soldiers of many nations. Therefore, in every peaceful place of the Upper Soča region a lasting memory is inscribed. Each point, cave, trench, church, path, mule track, hill, mountain, cemetery has its own soul and its own voice for those who are willing to listen and to see.
In the unspoiled and quiet sites of the Upper Soča region you will be able, through the story told by the guide, to re-experience the lives of soldiers during the years 1915–1917. Besides historical memorials you will have a chance to learn about local particularities that characterize the places and the people there.
The “Walks of Peace in the Soča Region Foundation« organizes guided tours to the outdoor museums and other sites of the Isonzo Front. Slovenian, English, Italian and German speaking guides can be hired throughout the year.
